North Richland Hills DFW Blog: Is it too hot to walk your dog in Texas?

Is it too hot to walk your dog in Texas?

Hot dogs Happy Friday afternoon to you all!

This past week we have had temperatures above the 100 degree mark. Yesterday my car read 109, 112 and 115 degrees all in the space of an hours worth of driving.

It is super hot in the air, so imagine walking on pavement or asphault in your bare feet when it is this hot. You don't want to risk that do you? You'd probably end up in the urgent care or hospital with burns on your feet.

I think you see where this is going. Please make sure that you are taking proper care of your dogs when you are going out for a walk. If you can't leave your hand on the ground for more than 3 seconds because it burns you, it's going to burn your dog and their sensitive foot pads. Save walks for early morning so the asphault has had time to cool down overnight.

Also, dogs cannot regulate heat by sweating as humans do. They need tons of fresh, cool water to help them as they pant off their temperature increase. Don't take your dog for a walk and have them in a sweater(true story: I saw another Realtor doing this before. It was summertime, 90ish degrees and she had a brokerage logo sweater for her dog and she was out walking him!)That is the surest way to heat stroke for your furry family member or death.

A backyard plastic kiddie pool with fresh water would be good also so they can go for a swim if you leave them outside during the day.

Mine are spoiled. Inside, in the air conditioning all day. No walks while its over 100 degrees.

So yes, a few pounds are adding up.

But it's hot.

Take care and God bless your weekend,

Amy Steele
